Carroll Dunham

$1,750 purchase

Carroll Dunham is known for his colorful, symbolistic paintings of nude bathers, often rendered cartoonish and crude. This print recalls how, over a long career, he has created a highly specific visual language, instantly recognizable as a Dunham fantasia. He began in the 1970s with painting primitive, abstract, biomorphic forms that eventually evolved into namable, concrete objects: man, woman, flower, tree. There’s a great privilege in seeing an artist’s original explorations and underlying formal obsessions; this 1988 print holds the secret swell of Dunham’s later themes and enriches the experience of viewing his mature work to come.
